Fishers of Men
The Gospel of Mark gives us the following account concerning the ministry of Jesus:
And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." They immediately left their nets and followed Him. (Mark 1:16-18)
That initial call to Simon and Andrew was clear and simple. Jesus invited them to join him on a mission to reach the souls of men and women. Up to this point, Simon and Andrew had used their time, resources, and abilities to catch fish. Now, upon responding to the call of Christ, they would give themselves to reaching lost humanity.
The same clear and concise call goes out to all of us today. “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Jesus still needs people like Simon and Andrew who will respond to the invitation to join Him in reaching the world with His grace and truth. The moral decay of modern society has created a great hunger in the hearts of many. In my view, there has never been a better time for the church to be mobilized in evangelism than right now. All Jesus needs is for us to hear and answer that call to “become fishers of men.”
In the Gospel of John, these words of Jesus are recorded:
Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! (John 4:35)
The time is now, the harvest is ready, and the call is going forth. Will you hear and respond? If so, Jesus will do for you what He did for two simple fishermen almost 2,000 years ago: “I will make you become fishers of men.”
